Why is the american black bear Threatened?
The American Black Bear is confronted with a wide variety of threats, including habitat loss, climate change, and hunting. Human interference such as logging, mining, burning, and building roads have led to a decline in the habitat of these black bears. As the bear habitats decrease, the animals are increasingly forced into human settlements to look for food in places like trash dumps and garbage cans. Black bears are no normally aggressive, but the more they interact with humans, the higher the likelihood of attacks on human. When people are attacked, the offending bear is often shot and killed. In addition to habitat loss, the American Black Bear is constantly in dangers of being hunted or poached. In some areas hunting of the black bear is legal, but this results in the threatened population.
What is already being done to help these bears?
Currently, some organizations such as the Black Bear Conservation Coalition help the threatened black bears. This organization focuses on the Louisiana Black Bear. They hold black bear summits at schools and use donations for habitat protection and restoration. The BBCC works only in eastern Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Members can volunteer or donate to help the black bears. Other small organizations such as CoveBear and the Bear Conservation Fund collect donation to help the bear's environment. Associations like the American Black Bear Association has sanctuaries to promote tourists to help the black bears. The sanctuaries are also used to preserve a stable black bear population.
